Talks
I enjoy talking at conferences, user groups, events, etc.
I tend towards unconferences and impromptu lightning talk formats, which tend to be lost in the churn. This page contains a selection of those that were structured enough, and had enough forethought that they actually had a slide deck!!!
Drupal @ Scale @ Dropsolid (2024)
First presented at Drupal Iberia 2024, and later at Drupal Day Portugal 2024, this talk explores the relationships between the language we use to map a domain, the stories we tell with that language, and the resulting technical architecture – and scalability thereof.
The slide deck is from the second event, integrated in the Festa do Software Livre 2024, an event that I thoroughly enjoyed overall.
The lovely people at Drupal Portugal have “threatened” that a video of the talk might be forthcoming - I’ll update here if it comes out.
Integrating outliers in agile practices (2019)
First presented at the 2019 Brisbane LAST Conference (LAST=Lean, Agile, and Systems Thinking) with my esteemed colleague Arthur Poropat, this talk explores stories of difference and integration, of how cognitive diversity contributes to innovation and problem solving, and of how teams can achieve excellent outcomes because of, rather than despite, their differences.
The slides are of limited use without narration, but I find it important to list it, since it highlights an inflection point in my career, and a personal milestone for me: “coming out” as neurodivergent in public - on stage, since if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing in style.
Thinking the unthinkable with Modern Agile (2019)
First presented in the Agile Brisbane group, this talk explores the Modern Agile’s “make safety a prerequisite” principle as it applies to our everyday knowledge work.
At the first edition of this talk, there was a lovely “What?, So What?, Now What?” debrief by the inimitable Christian Weinert.
